AOL Users
Issues

AOL users may have trouble with this site for a few technical reasons. The main issue revolves around AOL's use of proxy servers.

Details

It is AOL's policy to place users behind a proxy server. This is an issue for this site because the policy may disrupt the clustering of web servers. Web servers are clustered to enhance the efficiency of large web sites. Because of the way our cluster is implemented, it is important that the user remain connected to the same server throughout the browsing session. AOL’s use of proxy servers may confuse the web cluster and break the data library connection.

Workarounds

Users who are using AOL with their existing connection can most likely get around this problem by simply minimizing AOL and using the web- browser that came installed on their system. Users who are using AOL for their Internet access unfortunately have only one option, and that is to get a new Internet service provider.

Permanent Solutions

ITOS is working on a solution.

Site Requirements
Hardware

Just about any computer capable of running an up to date browser can be used on this site. Users should be warned, however, that some of the graphical search pages may require a fast machine to get acceptable performance. While these pages should all still function just fine, they can perform very slowly on old computers. To ensure that our users are getting optimal performance we offer the following minimal hardware listing:

  • 350MHz Pentium II/500MHz AMD K6-2
  • 128MB RAM
  • 5GB free space on your harddisk if you plan on downloading imagery

Operating System

Any operating system capable of running an up to date browser can be used on this site. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Windows9x/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • MacOS 9/X
  • UNIX and UNIX like OSs (including the free UNIXs)

Web Browser

The browser is the most important component in ensuring this site works for you. Your browser should be CSS2 and ECMA-262 compliant. Typically, getting your browser up to date is both free and simple. The following is a list of browsers that we recommend for use on this site. The list is clickable, so you can click to begin the process of downloading and installing the browser if you wish.

We specifically do not recommend the following browsers. They are old, standards un-compliant, and present security risks.
