Frequently-anticipated questions:

What does this data set describe?

Title: GA STARS (State Transportation And Report Statistics)
Abstract:
A data set showing the locations of traffic counters (TC) throughout the state of Georgia. This is migrating to predominantly GPS coordinates but, those which have not been collected are located using milepoint or midpoint via event mapping on a measured route layer. GPS collection and integration will proceed on a yearly basis until all TC locations have been accurately located. Portable traffic counters utilizing tubes installed across the road surface collect the number of vehicles and can classify the types of vehicles as well.

Why was the data set created?

To clearly and concisely display the 20,000+ traffic counter locations collected by the GA Department of Transportation. The count values collected at each TC site represent the number of vehicles crossing that particular traffic counter during a standardized time, typically 48-hours. Adjustment factors are then applied to these raw 48 hour traffic counts to generate the Average Annual Daily Traffic (AADT) which is used for a number of applications including the generation of the annual Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS) reports, future traffic forecasting, and the validation for road improvements.
